Industrial Applications.
Industrial companies increasingly rely on advanced sensor
and control systems to ensure high productivity levels and low
cost operations to remain competitive in the global market
place. Making sensor solutions smarter, more available, economic and easier
to deploy and manage is vital for applications such as oil
and gas, semi-conductor manufacturing, factory automation,
pharmaceuticals, power generation and distribution, and mining.
Customer Benefits Include:
- Cost elimination of hard-wiring, including safety and
regulatory obstacles for running cables in constricted or dangerous areas
- Reduced maintenance costs of sensor deployments
- Improving operational visibility for predictive maintenance and process
optimization

Environmental Monitoring.
Crossbow’s unique wireless networking solution is an industry
first in its ability to integrate the latest wireless mesh technology to collect
practical environmental data Air Temperature, Relative Humidity, Location (GPS),
Ambient Light, Solar Radiation, Barometric Pressure, Precipitation and Soil
Moisture/Temperature.
Mesh sensor technology allows scalable range extension by node
to node sensor communication. This technology has already been proven in
numerous applications and is ideal for deployments where multiple sensor nodes
are required.
The standard base station offers an RS232 port that can be
easily interfaced to either a PC or a long range device such as a cellular link
or sat link, or an 802.11 WiFi backbone
Customer Benefits Include:
- Low-power, Remote Operation
- Reduced Deployment Costs
- Reduced Maintenance Costs

Golf Course Irrigation.
To reduce the cost of maintaining
award-winning greens and fairways, Desert Mountain—a collection of six
championship golf courses in the high Sonoran Desert north of Scottsdale,
AZ—decided to install a wireless sensor network to take the
guesswork out of turf management. With the aid of
RF-enabled sensors, the club's director of agronomy, Shawn Emerson,
has been able to reduce irrigation costs by
15%–20% and upgrade maintenance practices.
Sandia National Labs in Albuquerque, New
Mexico, is conducting research on the practicality and water savings potential
of growing livestock forage in arid
regions using "Controlled Enviromental Agriculture" (CEA) techniques. An experemental hydroponic greenhouse
was built at the Livestock Border Crossing Facility in Santa
Teresa, New Mexico. Sandia used 27 of Crossbow's environmental
monitoring Motes, called the MEP410, to assist
with monitoring air temperature, relative humidity, photosynthetyc active radiation,
and total solar radiation. Data from all of the Mote sensors
was sampled, packaged, time stamped and wirelessly sent to Sandia.
The received data was then processed and configured into tme series data files.
After post-processing data was visualized in Matlab. Because of the receiving
data was developed hydroponics system to reduce water consumption by up to 50%.
Building Automation.
Companies delivering solutions for building
automation increasingly rely on wireless sensor and control systems
to avoid expensive installations and maintenance of wired systems.
Simple point-to-point wireless networks are prone to failure due to environments
with tough RF conditions. Making sensor solutions smarter, more available,
economic and easier to deploy and manage is vital
for applications such as energy management, HVAC control,
occupancy monitoring, security and asset protection, and meter reading.
Customer Benefits Include:
- Cost elimination of hard-wiring
- Mobility and ease of network reconfiguration
- Improving operational visibility for energy management and
occupancy
Life Fitness and Crossbow
Life Fitness Company – the world leading training equipment manufacturer have
studied during one year wireless technology market. It was intended by the means
of wireless technology not only to control the use of different trainers, their
workload but to work out individual training programs for the sport club
members. The visitor should come to the trainer, to place his wireless club card
against the reader and the training program will be loaded from the server to
the trainer.
The advantages of this solution are indisputable:
- the low cost of sensors built into training equipment
- no wires between server and each trainer, low power
consumption of sensors (the AA-battery is capable to ensure the sensors work
during several years)
- scalability: sensors form so-called “mesh network”,
each sensor can be the traffic source and repeater
- in such a way, it’s very easy to add several new trainers or to move old
ones without disturbing network functionality

Asset Management.
Global supply chain and transportation applications
increasingly require real-time sensor and location information about their
supplies and assets. Wireless sensor networks meet these customer requirements
efficiently with low installation and management costs.
Making sensor solutions smarter, more available, economic and
easier to deploy and manage is vital for applications such as active RFID,
container tracking, personnel identification for secured access, sensitive asset
security, raw materials and WIP tracking on shop floors, temperature chain
tracking of perishable goods, and mobile equipment tracking.
